The big plus for this special edition DVD is the inclusion of commentary by the director, Osamu Dezaki and the executive producer, Mataichiro Yamamoto. This commentary is in Japanese, with English sub-titles. The commentary gives some insights into what went on behind the scenes, and why they made certain decisions. They even talk about scenes that didn't make it into the movie, and why they weren't included. Mr. Dezaki and Mr. Yamamoto do get bogged down a bit on one topic, and don't comment on every single scene of the movie. One other negative is the commentary soundtrack does not play any sound from the movie. This of course, gives the viewer more time to listen and read the sub-titles, but unless she's watched the movie before, she may be confused as to what they are commenting on. The commentary helps the viewer see a lot of the background of the movie, and why the material was presented in the manner seen. A lot more could have been said, but at least it's a step in the right direction as far as Anime DVD extras go.

The movie itself is an original story based on the Golgo 13 manga. It's a complicated political drama, with many twists and turns to keep any true drama fan happy. Just when it feels like the viewer has a handle on the plot and motivations of the characters, some new twist jumps up to throw everyone in new directions. Although he is the main character, Golgo 13 seems more of a plot device as the main action revolves around Queen Bee. The viewer is drawn more into her world, and comes to sympathize with her plight and why she is taking the actions that she is.

The grittiness continues into both soundtracks as well. Remastered in 5.1, both soundtracks strive to carry out the visual atmosphere presented. In both, the music is given a slight jazzy feel, but is often subdued. More priority is given to the sound effects: gun shots, screams and explosions.

The English dub does a good job of remaining true to the original Japanese version. No bad choices for voices stand out and all the acting stays pretty close to character. It did feel at times as if the actors were whispering in comparison to the other sound effects and music playing, but for the most part this fit with the atmosphere presented.

These designs tend to follow the idea of big bulky muscular men and tall lean and well-endowed women. The world of Golgo 13 is also a very violent one, so the violence is very graphic in nature.

Träumend's dub isn't strong enough to be a dub/sub cross-over phenomenon: its faithfulness to the subtitle script keeps it from being as smooth and natural as it could and the acting has occasional glitches. Nevertheless the cast is thoroughly professional, there are no glaring mistakes in the casting choices, and the potential for good performances is there, enough so that the cast sometimes feels wasted on the material (particularly Mela Lee as Shinku). Unfortunately Träumend is one of several series whose future is as uncertain as that of their licensor Geneon, making it—and its quality dub—something of a risky investment.

Whether Träumend will drown while attempting to navigate the waters of high drama in its creaky ship of clichés the way its predecessor did remains to be seen; in the meantime its lighter moments and stylish visuals, along with its improved lead character, are bailing water just fast enough to keep it afloat. So long as its uncritical acceptance of human/doll romance doesn't sink things for you, that is.

Luckily this second season has yet to dwell at length on tedious dramatics. The resolution of Jun's social maladies eliminates most of the original's oppressive preachiness (and raises his likability meter a degree or two), and sequences like Shinku's apathy-inspiring moral agonizing are inter-cut with other things better suited to the series' depth and strength (or lack thereof). Like humor. Though repetitive, and sometimes irritatingly so, the series' silly-antics-centered humor divides up the bits that drag. It even manages to coax out a smile here and there—most often at Shinku's amusingly uncharacteristic love of Detective Kun-kun and his really lame puppet show. The occasional doll skirmishes serve a similar purpose, piling on the eye-candy with spectacular displays of magic and surprisingly fluid animation until one almost forgets how inconclusive and ultimately pointless they are. And even when plodding along dreary, well-trod narrative paths, the series' slick gothic style provides plenty for the eyes to feed on: more elaborate dream worlds, dolls whose eerie porcelain beauty is appropriately doll-like, and loli-goth outfits with frills and folds lovingly animated. Even the score has a nice gothic quality when it isn't wasting composer Shinkichi Mitsumune's talents on fluff compositions.

The beginning of the second series in this franchise casts back to the opening episodes of the first season when the series still deserved the “entertainment” in "high-gloss, low-depth entertainment," before it succumbed to ambitions of drama that submerged what charm it had.

There isn't anything wrong with dramatic ambitions of course, but you need strong qualities (character, truth, conviction, focus—anything really, so long as it's strong enough) to succeed at those ambitions, and outside of its technical prowess Rozen Maiden simply hasn't any strong qualities. That remains unchanged. There isn't a thing—a conversation, event, or character—in the show that wasn't borrowed from the vast stores of stock anime elements. New season? Cue the new villain who is stronger than everyone combined and cook up an excuse to keep your trump card (Shinku) out of the fray until the last moment. The resulting predictability bores rather than reassures (the way the similarly predictable UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie does). Character growth is substituted by the showcasing of shallow quirks (everyone has their own speech affectation, awesome!), and the new additions do nothing to add to the tenuous charm of the existing character interactions.

While the writers are desperately trying to breathe life into Amane and Hikari's relationship, the director has clearly given up. Masayuki Sakoi's spare direction is fully capable of exploiting the obviously limited budget, as when the sad, minimalist score, highly stylized visuals, and vulnerable character designs with their big, shimmery eyes combine to silently express romantic longing and unspoken loss during the opening of the Etoile election. But when the focus drifts away from the central relationship, he loses interest. There's a sad, flatly animated excuse for a tennis showdown in which distant figures move like cardboard targets in a carnival game, some embarrassingly stiff horse-riding action, and it's hard not to notice how bland his use of the forgettable designs for Hikari and Amane is in comparison to his striking, subtly sexual usage of the instantly compatible color-coordination of Nagisa and Shizuma.

No dub, no extras, no surprise—Media Blasters' releases as of late have nearly all followed this pattern, so it's best we all get used to it.

The cheesy, Graduate-inspired conclusion to Shizuma and Nagisa's self-destructing relationship is fun, and satisfying in its own shamelessly shallow way, but it's still fair to say that Strawberry Panic! ends weak. Forget that the plotting is ridiculous, that the internal monologues read like bad emo lyrics, that the side-characters are obnoxious, and that its treatment of same-sex relationships is utterly without nuance. None of that would have mattered had the series hit the dizzying melodramatic note it was aiming for. But unfortunately, for every shameless, bittersweet high that the Nagisa/Shizuma material reaches, there's an equally shameless low waiting somewhere in the Hikari/Amane material to knock viewers off of their blissful shoujo-ai cloud.

If you were to pare Strawberry Panic! down to its central romance it would be a pretty solid romantic melodrama. Though nothing particularly adventurous, the Nagisa/Shizuma romance has drawing power, in large part because they simply look as if they belong together, but also because theirs is a rocky and uncertain relationship. Shizuma's feelings for Nagisa are never entirely clear, which, coupled with Nagisa's babe-in-the-woods innocence, adds an edge of potential emotional exploitation to the pairing that it never quite loses even as the series draws it to a definite, satisfyingly preposterous conclusion. Were it not for the distractions of the supporting cast, their relationship could easily carry the series—as the Shizuma-focused fourth volume proved. The final episodes are studded with little reminders of that potential. Shizuma's violent, private display of despair at Nagisa's drifting affections is nicely melodramatic, and Mai Nakahara continues to milk Nagisa's underlying vulnerability for all it's worth. Whenever the two take center stage there's a palpable sense that Strawberry Panic! might just salvage something more than lesbian titillation from its mess of romantic clichés.

Alas, it is not to be. For the beginning of volume five also marks the full-time comeback of the supporting cast: the teddy-bear toting loli weirdo, the reserved underclassman servant-girl, Chikaru's squealing cosplay underlings—the whole herd. Chikaru actually acquits herself quite nicely, providing succor and sensible advice to various sobbing maidens, and Tamao makes a nice romantic foil for Shizuma, but any sparks they strike are immediately smothered by the return of the series' most crippling hindrance: the Hikari/Amane relationship. For some unfathomable reason the writers insist on giving it equal footing with the Shizuma/Nagisa relationship, despite how plainly obvious it is that the pair has no personality or chemistry. The narrative calisthenics that they pull off in order to wring pathos from the pairing would be funny were they not so pathetically misguided. They can take away Amane's memory as many times as they like, and have Hikari follow her amnesiac ass all the way to Atlantis, teary eyes a-simpering until the lost civilizations rise from the kelpy depths, and we still wouldn't feel a thing for them, because there's nothing there to feel for. Without the emotional payoff to excuse the plot manipulations, the writing comes across exactly as it is—clumsy and cheap.

A little ham-handed at times, Death Note's biggest draw are the myriad questions it raises about what “murder” actually is. If you're given the power to kill anyone, anywhere, anytime and nobody'll know it's you, who would you take down? Would you be able to kill anyone in the first place? What if you're killing criminals, is it still murder? Whose life is worth saving, and whose isn't? While it doesn't answer any of these questions (at least in this first volume), the fact that it raises them at all is fairly uncommon for a shonen manga and should fascinate anyone looking for something a little deeper than the average young adult title.

Art-wise, Hikaru no Go's Takeshi Obata is in fine form here, with distinctive characters and clean line work. Particularly notable is the death god Ryuk, who could have been turned into a fan-pandering bishonen-style character but instead is a grotesque hulking beast, the kind of thing most people would probably think of when they're asked to imagine what a grim spectre of death would look like. Although the backgrounds can be a little busy at times in comparison to the character art, Death Note is still a beautiful volume.

The only worrisome thing about this series is that it doesn't seem like they can really stretch this story out forever, and we know it runs at least 8 or 9 volumes in Japan (as of this writing). By the end of the first volume it's become a deadly game of cat-and-mouse between Light and mysterious super-detective L who's hot on his trail, and the two spend most of the last half of the volume second-guessing and outsmarting one another. If this pattern continues, it's easy to see how the entire premise would get tiresome pretty quick. For now, though, Death Note remains a solid, gripping and extremely likable title. Don't miss it.

Let's face it; when the words “Shonen Jump” appear on the front cover of a graphic novel, fine literature isn't really what you're expecting. Fast-paced action, never-say-die underdog heroes with hearts of gold and seemingly endless storylines are usually the order of the day. That isn't a bad thing, but something like Death Note, which eschews most of the usual shonen trappings, is certainly a breath of fresh air. That said, there's a chance people looking for some kind of shonen action-adventure where Light Yagami controls his shinigami against a bunch of other kids with shinigami… those folks would be much happier reading, say, Shaman King.

Paced very quickly, Death Note's first volume sets up the relatively complicated premise with ease and immediately gets to work developing the lead character, Light. Light is clearly designed as the ‘average above-average’ Japanese student—listless, bored, cynical and smug, Light hardly has the qualities of a hero and for the purposes of this story, calling him a ‘hero’ would be disingenuous. His immediate goal is to use the Death Note to kill the world's most violent criminals, which triggers a massive police investigation and a global fascination with who's killing the criminals. Being an egotistical kid already, it's not long before all the fame (or infamy, rather) goes straight to Light's head and he starts talking about building some kind of utopia where he's in charge. While most anyone would at least think to use the Death Note in the same way Light does, how he goes about doing it is hardly sympathetic, but also very believable. It's this kind of realistic character development that's a big part of what makes Death Note so compelling.

Unfortunately, Justice For All does not feature a fifth case. While the four available in the game are still good, it's disappointing to not have the advanced features from the original's fifth case. Where are the touch screen elements? Where are the 3D elements? With these features missing in action, Justice For All feels like less of a game than the original. Understandably, it is also a lot shorter than the first.

It's not as though Justice For All remains completely unchanged from the original. There is a new gameplay mechanic, the Psyche Lock, which requires you to present evidence to characters to get information from them. However, this “new” feature isn't new at all: it simply introduces gameplay elements from court trials into the evidence gathering sections. Unlike the art assets, the music remains largely changed, which is unfortunate. The first game featured an excellent soundtrack, and these new tunes seem lackluster and out of place.

Although this second outing for our favorite video game lawyer is generally underwhelming, it still retains all of the elements that made the first game so charming. The writing is just as fantastic as ever, and the characters are still highly enjoyable. If you've played and enjoyed the first game, you'll want to pick up this second game. For better or worse, this reviewer has become invested in the characters of the franchise, and I want to find out what happens to them, regardless of the potential stagnation the series may struggle through.

Players of the original Phoenix Wright may be disappointed to see that the game mechanics remain unchanged. The storytelling is identical to the first outing: you will always be in a murder trial, and you will always find a client that you believe is innocent, and you will always face overwhelming odds against a crazy prosecutor. Frustratingly, the story's plot twists are becoming much more predictable, considering the pattern set by the first game: one of the witness will always be the real killer, but the truth will not be revealed until you predictably unravel contradictions in their testimonies.

The recycling of many assets from the first game also becomes somewhat alarming. The returning cast (which makes up most of the characters in the game), are animated with the same sprites. Many of the backgrounds are the same: unimproved from the original. In video games, it's expected that a series offers improvements to the previous iterations, but this is Phoenix Wright's ultimate shortcoming: it is many ways a disappointing retread. For example, the original Phoenix Wright featured five cases, with one specifically designed for the DS's unique capabilities (which was a nice touch, given that the Phoenix Wright games arriving in America are ports of Game Boy Advance games). The final case was an incredibly absorbing one which upped the ante considerably: pages of evidence to sort through, a large cast of characters, and a moving storyline that drastically changes one character permanently. It was easily the largest case in Phoenix's career. The gameplay was phenomenal as well, allowing you take fingerprints at a scene but tapping the screen and blowing dust away. One impressive sequence uses the DS's advanced 3D capabilities to render a scene in full 3D.

While some may find the reading-intensive formula of the franchise to be overwhelming (or boring), those that can appreciate a well written story will find much to enjoy in the Phoenix Wright games. Comparing the series to a graphic novel series would not be unfounded. Like a good manga, the game features some lively characters that are drawn in an eye-catching style and animated nicely. The stories are compelling, as each case is filled with twists and turns: you'll find yourself continuing onward simply to unravel the mystery behind each case. However, the greatest aspect of the franchise has to be its truly AAA-caliber writing. The dialogue is hilarious, and surprisingly self-aware. The localization team has done a stellar job at not simply translating the text, but adding surprisingly biting, tongue-in-cheek jokes, and unexpected pop culture references. The titular character, Phoenix, is incredibly lovable thanks to the stellar first-person narrative the game possesses: his insights provide a captivating, grounded look into a zany world.

However, like many manga series, Ace Attorney is not very accessible to the first-time player. While the game makes many attempts at making the game feel comfortable for newcomers, the experience is certainly lessened when players encounter characters from the first game. In fact, a majority of the game's plot is driven by events and characters from the first Phoenix Wright. While this is great fan service for players of the original, it will undoubtedly be somewhat disorienting for newcomers. Considering how sublime the first Phoenix Wright is, I implore that you play the first game before purchasing this sequel. To do so would be akin to reading Bleach once the story moves onto Soul Society: it will be completely comprehensible, but you will lose much of the back-story of the characters. Also, like Bleach's later story arcs, Phoenix Wright loses much of its momentum in this second outing, becoming much too dependent upon its formulaic structure.

The first Phoenix Wright quickly became a cult success on the Nintendo DS. And no wonder: there's an undeniable allure in pretending to be a lawyer, yelling “Objection” into the DS microphone. The highly likeable characters, the incredibly sharp writing, and some absorbing game mechanics made the first Phoenix Wright a real winner.

Phoenix Wright is one of the few text-heavy games to hit it big in the States. The Japanese have long embraced the interactive novel genre, but those games rarely make it to America. The few that do become localized are usually adult “hentai” games. Because of the genre's relative under-representation in the US, some may be surprised to learn that the gameplay of Phoenix Wright is nearly identical to the somewhat more “provocative” games. For the most part, there is very little gameplay: you move from location to location, talk to characters, and read through an incredible amount of dialogue. There are a few moments where players must make choices, but for the most part, the game plays like a choose-your-own-adventure novel.

The second half of Excel Saga begins with an honest if shameless declaration from the creators that a new character is being added solely to boost ratings and sell more merchandise. While the show continues to earn my respect for its willingness to mock its own conventions so mercilessly, not even two Ropponmatsus can counteract the numbing feeling that begins to take hold after so many episodes of nonstop insanity. Having desensitized its viewers to the madcap antics, the show needs to work twice as hard to make them laugh, but for the most part it's business as usual. A giant robot death panda would have been hilarious 10 episodes ago but by now we're expecting that sort of thing. Then, Inspiration: after three half-hours of overheated yuks Excel Saga Volume 4 closes with one of the funniest 30 minutes ever animated.

The three-episode arc that introduces the Ropponmatsus is largely forgettable and sometimes painfully unfunny, but the new characters are nonetheless a welcome addition to the cast. The two androids do not really add anything to the show but the novel idea of an “adult' and “child' version of the same character coexisting at the same time is a lot of fun, even if Bruce Willis did it first. It's not their fault that the laughs have begun to dry up by the time they arrive on the scene…the elder Ropponmatsu's aptitude for blowing up is actually pretty amusing…but rather the increasingly forced zaniness of the Excel world. There's only so many ways to squish a Puchuu or send Excel hurtling down a trap door. The outing in which the Ropponmatsus' programming causes them to fall madly in love with Excel and Hyatt is more successful; the off-color lesbian jokes would make South Park proud. But it still doesn't measure up to sidesplitting euphoria of Excel's early episodes, and Dr. Shioji's obsession with very little girls is not funny here and it's probably not funny in Japan either.

However, none of the art, characterization, or undergirding mythology locks together in this volume to make a remotely compelling whole. Instead, save a flashback in the beginning that explores Utsume's troubled childhood, all it does is delve into background. Deeply. Repetitively. One long, complicated exposition is bad form for the manga medium (“show, don't tell” definitely applies); two is bad for any medium. Yet two is exactly what is delivered here, since the characters split up into two groups and independently learn pretty much the same things about the kamikakushi from different groups of people one right after another. It's all so horribly unnecessary, and it is bad form that will leave you wishing you had not bothered in the first place.

All in all, Missing –Kamikakushi no Monogatari– is actually worse than the sum of its parts, and that is an ignoble feat that happens only rarely. The pacing and action is grossly inappropriate, and at three volumes total, there is no room left for the sort of heroic redemption that is at this point required in the final chapters. Die-hard fans of the novel series might be interested in the manga, if only to see their favorite characters come to life and perhaps to enjoy the six-page bonus art gallery included at the end of this volume…but other potential readers would be well-advised not to bother. Do not let this pitiable excuse for printed matter spirit away your time and your hard-earned money!

Nor does the fault lie with the world-building or character-developing talents of Gakuto Coda. Despite the relatively large cast of characters for such a story series, they are all distinctive, with surprisingly complex personalities. In particular, both Aki, who it seems secretly has a crush on Utsume, and Utsume's childhood friend Toshiya have potential to impact the thrust of the narrative later on. Likewise, the relationship between the human world and that of the kamikakushi is reasonably nuanced and intriguing, with plenty of well-considered detail about how they entrap humans and try to integrate their world with ours. In this volume, for example, we learn that ghost stories are the keys with which these paranormal beings use to gain access to the human mind. After that, they can use those minds with psychic abilities to spread their influence further, like an infection. And once a human is drawn into their world, he is either destroyed or turned into a monster like Ayame, destined to bring doom down upon other humans. Clearly, this does not bode well for the Literature Club's chances of bringing back Utsume in one, sane piece.

Although there is significant cross-pollination of properties across multiple media platforms, stories that work well in one medium do not necessarily work equally well for another. Take, for instance, feature films that get turned into videogames. The same long, cinematic sequences that wow moviegoers in theaters bore gamers looking for an intensively interactive experience. In the same way, some of the narrative devices that make novels gripping page-turners put manga on a fast-track to the recycle bin. Unfortunately, the second volume of Gakuto Coda's Missing –Kamikakushi no Monogatari– is one of those manga adaptations of novel series that would better serve its potential audience as toilet paper than as reading material.

Although the first volume, with its mysterious plot setup, was passable in quality, volume two is, to put it as bluntly as possible, excretable. This is not the fault of Rei Mutsuki (also known as Lay Mutsuki, depending upon the romanization of her name), who adapted the novels. Mutsuki's layouts are decently attractive and cinematic in the standard fashion, and her fine-lined shoujo art is appealingly delicate and wispy. She even manages occasional moments of quirky cuteness, such as the snaggle-toothed Ryoko, that reminiscent of Karin and occasional moments of twisted, sinister expression reminiscent of D.Gray-man–although she is not able to sustain anything on even the mainstream, commercial level of Yuna Kagesaki or Katsura Hoshino for very long.

The dub is grating. The voices aren't bad, but every character is forced to speak in an annoyingly flat monotone. They all seem to be spitting out their words as fast as possible, so everything comesoutinaquickstreamofwordslikethis. There's little to no emotion behind the line readings; in fact, each line sounds exactly like the last one. It doesn't help that so little of consequence takes place in each episode. The characters don't sound excited because, really, who's going to get excited about receiving a pair of mittens for Christmas or going to shrine for New Year's Day? The voices seem to match the characters, but the acting just isn't there. The actors seem totally unenthused; they're on autopilot. They could have simply rearranged the dialogue from the first series and inserted it into the sequel, and I doubt anyone would have noticed.

We all understand that Mahoromatic is supposed to be a fun, lighthearted romantic romp. It's one of the few tolerable entries in the maid fetish subgenre, and in the first series, Gainax's melancholy countdown to the end of Mahoro's life added a sweetly macabre twist to the proceedings. Here, the weight of Mahoro's life clock seems to be gone, and the show is going through the routine motions of every other maid show out there. If you're a completist, then you can't pass this up. For everyone else, volume two represents a steep decline in the already-questionable quality of the show. If it were any lighter, it'd float away.

The show retains its disturbingly sexist leanings, too. Mahoro remains the super-capable, highly intelligent combat android that would rather cook and clean for some loser guy than be a respected and powerful woman. Added to the mix in the sequel series is Minawa, a self-loathing, subservient jailbait maid who looks like she's about ten years old and spends most of the series talking about how worthless she is, since she has no heart and can't feel anything (except, apparently, self-pity). Nobody ever seems to reassure her. The message here is that even the most capable woman belongs at home, cleaning and cooking and being a sex object. Minawa's endless self-hatred adds a fairly disturbing footnote to that message about domestic female depression. We spend an inordinate amount of time watching these two bathe each other; I'm not sure who gets all hot seeing Minawa's frequently bared pre-teen chest, but I'm pretty sure I don't want to meet that person. Why doesn't Mahoro use her awesome combat powers to help clean up the galaxy? Why does she use her amazing intergalactic transport to get a special turkey for Suguru, instead of using it to travel to exciting places? Apparently, she'd rather wear a fetish costume and scrub the floors. Welcome to 1955, people.

Gainax seems to have dumped this thing out on the cheap, too. The animation has taken a step backwards from the first series, using highly minimalist backgrounds. The character designs aren't any different (although they do seem a bit simpler somehow), but they're a lot more static this time around. We spend more time hearing people talk. Mahoro almost never actually fights anything, there's little machinery on display. This volume seems to be particularly mundane, as there's hardly any science fiction element to these episodes at all. If it weren't for the tacked-on alien subplot shoehorned in to the top and bottom of the later episodes on the disc, uninitiated viewers might think that watching Mahoro cook is all there is to this show. Truthfully, they wouldn't be too far off the mark with that conclusion.

Even the slapstick moments don't stick out too badly. That's when you know you have a decent panel of characters, when neither the serious nor the silly moments seem out of the ordinary. It's just effortless entertainment. And for that reason, Sket Dance is definitely worth watching.

Sket Dance is good, solid, wholesome fun. It's like the Boxcar Children, if the Aldens were just a group of ordinary high school students, and Jessie was a loud blonde who carried around a field hockey stick to beat up hooligans. It's energetic, it has a fun cast of characters, and by the end of the first episode, it's already established the value of friendship.

The series starts, as many anime do, with the arrival of a new transfer student. His plan on getting through high school is just laying low, but within hours, he's found himself hanging out with SKET Dan, a club whose sole purpose is to help people out with whatever they need. They don't have any clients yet, but they're right on the verge of cracking a graffiti case… maybe. Missions aside, what makes the adventures of this club so entertaining is not so much what they do with their afterschool time, but the way they interact with one another. This whole series is basically a show about three friends who goof around, hang out, and maybe help some people every now and again. It's great. They're like surrogate friends for the half hour you're just holed up in your bedroom watching anime.

Last Exile is an epic series. While the full story hasn't surfaced, the majority of the players have been introduced by this volume. While the story seems focused on a young hero, there's more going on in the background. As the story unfolds, more characters are being introduced that help drive the main plot. While the action and story are easy enough to follow for a casual viewer, the more astute viewer can see the plot beginning to build with these four episodes. Character growth is an important part of a story, and Claus and Lavi face some strong challenges as they are thrust into the dangerous world of the Silvana. The plot thickens at a breakneck pace in these episodes; you may want to go back to the first volume and pick up the details you might have missed the first time around.

Last Exile is simply a stunning series. Positional Play builds on the foundation established in the first volume and brings the series to new heights of excellence. Whether drawn in by the beautiful imagery, or an outstanding cast, viewers are sure to be entertained by the story that wraps it all together. While it is still not clear where the story is going, or what lies ahead for the main cast, it is evident that the ride should be quite entertaining.

Last Exile features some of the best animation from one of the hottest studios in Japan. Gonzo put a lot of time and effort into the creation of this series, and unlike some of their previous work, the animation and artwork stays top-notch even through some of the slower parts in these episodes. With a television series, it's not unusual for a studio to dump too much money in to the first episode, and then skimp a bit in the next few. With Last Exile, Gonzo kept the bar high, making each episode more intricate than the last.

In both the English and Japanese soundtracks, each cast has adjusted well to their characters; their performances evolve as the series continues. Making his appearance in the first episode of volume 2 is Joshua Seth, who portrays Dio. While a bit less ambiguous than his Japanese counterpart (in Japan, the voice of Dio is voiced by a woman) Dio comes across as playful and slightly menacing.

Volume 2 contains the next four episodes of the series and the standard amount of extras for a Geneon release. The basic features include Dolby Digital 2.0 versions of the English and Japanese soundtrack, an anamorphic widescreen presentation, English subtitles and scene access. The extras include the textless version of the ending, the original Japanese ending, a collection of commercials, an art gallery and the standard array of Geneon previews. While these are all solid features, the real treat on this DVD are the episodes themselves.

The performances are generally competent, but only Maryke Hendrikse, the voice of Tabby, stands out, if for no other reason than the massive contrast her performance here has to her other major current role (Revy in Black Lagoon). The English script often follows the subtitles word-for-word when lip-synching is not an issue, and never makes significant modifications at other times.

Extras this time are strictly limited to company trailers and a release announcement for the Japanese DVDs.

If you want thrills, look elsewhere. If you want insight about who the characters really are beyond the (literal) images they project in the game, then this volume may work for you.

The other great appeals of this volume, as has been traditional for both this series and its predecessor, are its background art, CG effects, and soundtrack. The settings may be the same ones used earlier in the series, but the quality and intricate, inventive detail of the fantastic background pieces never wavers. The CG effects, which mostly involve the gates and flowing water, not only look sharp but integrate well with the normal visuals and always remain interesting to look at. The soundtrack likewise never gets boring as it provides a varied mix of electronic and symphonic sounds in a wide range of styles from wistful melody to operatic vigor to decidedly more sinister tones, including multiple insert songs. Though well-performed, the Yuki Kajiura-produced opener has a mundane sound, while the more distinctive closer by Ali Project may remind some of the themes the duo has done for series like Avenger and Noir.

Beyond the background art and some sharp CG effects, the artistry of this span of episodes is nothing spectacular. Character designs, though very inventive and distinctive, are not of especially high quality, and a short-lived but serious breakdown in quality control in their renditions happens early in episode 14. The few monsters who pop up continue to have a cartoonish look, and the non-CG animation, already minimized by a shortage of action content, is unlikely to impress anyone.

It's been said before, but should be reiterated: if you watch .hack//Roots (or its predecessor .hack//SIGN) for any reason other than what its character interactions reveal about the real people behind the avatars, you will probably be disappointed. Despite its fantasy setting, it actually has little action or true fantasy content. Nor does this volume, which spans episodes 11-14, offer much for plot substance or game play insight. In fact, now that the hunt for the Key of the Twilight plot seems to have climaxed, very little actually happens in this volume beyond one development with long-reaching implications and a couple of lesser ones. The vast majority of the content simply involves characters talking with one another and wondering about what has happened to Oban.

Doesn't sound exciting? Although even the most devoted fans may occasionally get impatient with the content, those who allow themselves to get involved with the characters may be surprised at how quickly and smoothly these episodes pass. Each person clearly has their own style of play, own motivations, and own ideals about what he or she wants to get out of the game, and what these conversations reveal about the players can be fascinating. For players like Sakisaki, playing in the world is all about striving towards goals, even if they are vague ones. For players like Yata and Pi, acquisition of power and solving the game's biggest mysteries seem to be the appeal, while others like Phyllo, Shino, and (one would guess) Bset see the game as a social experience and players like Haseo continue because of the relationships they establish in the game. And then we have Tabby, who proves the most interesting character to follow this time around and the one who experiences the most development. We finally see cracks in the chirpy enthusiasm she has, until this point, consistently projected into the game, and start to get an inkling about the person she really is, what has drawn her to this game, and what she desperately needs to get out of the experience. This is where the greatest strength of the series lies.

These first few episodes of Suzuka prove that no anime can fail too badly as long as there's good source material. This one gets the basics down—boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, boy slowly gets to know girl better—so that viewers will easily be drawn into a sweet little love story. The series' shortcomings come mostly from the production end, with poor animation technique and second-rate acting dragging things down. Let's just say that anyone coming for a little track-and-field sports action probably won't find the action they were looking for, despite what the credit sequences might show. Fans of laid-back teenage romance, however, will definitely get their fill as the story shows how love really is: a long-distance run that eventually gets there, step by gentle step.

Speaking of the theme sequences, the music in the new AD Police series is really quite enjoyable to listen to. The vocal songs are fun to sing along to, and the instrumentals are soothing to listen to. One of the main things that the viewer might notice, though, is that the same tracks are recycled over and over again throughout the entire series, so that the music can be predicted by the contents of the scene before it is even played. For instance, there's a steamy saxophone solo that plays every time Hans is left alone with his girlfriend. This eventually gets amusing, since nothing romantic ever takes place, regardless of what the music might imply. Especially nice is the quiet piano piece that is played in the foreground as the AD Police engage in a bloody battle with several Genom employees. Somehow, the sad, lyrical piece makes the tragic scene more dramatic than a pounding symphonic ensemble would, and the effect is very touching. Overall, even with the sometimes overplayed pieces that are sprinkled in the series, there are also some nice one-shot pieces that fit the scenes very nicely and make the soundtrack one worth thinking about.

As far as the artistic aspects of the series are concerned, there were certain things that could be better, and others that were just fine. The frame per second count was rather low, which in turn made the animation a bit choppy. With a series lasting only twelve episodes long, and with a minor emphasis on action sequences, perhaps more work could have been splurged to make the scenes flow better. Not much attention was paid to the characters' mouths, either, as oftentimes the actor would stop speaking long before the flapping mouths stopped. Overall, the quality of the animation could have been improved; if it wasn't in the budget to do so, it can be excused, as it doesn't hamper the series too much. Still, it would have been nice to feel the driving excitement of the plot not only in the voices, but also on screen. The art itself, though, is fine, and makes the characters enjoyable to watch. The character designs are pleasing to the eye, and match the people's personas well. There were times, though, when the charcaters' mouths were placed at odd angles, which some viewers might consider disconcerting the first few times. Also, it's a puzzle as to why some of the characters will wear the same outfits in every scene, especially if it's their at-home casual wear. Aside from the occasional quirks, the characters are fun to watch. The backgrounds are also desgined deftly, especially the buildings, which look quite natural. The art, in general, is drawn rather well, and does a great service is countering the slightly choppy animation.

Although the Zombie Apocalypse subgenre of sci fi and horror movies has been part of public consciousness since the low-budget 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead set the standard for the genre, it has seen an upsurge in popularity in the past few years, including the Resident Evil franchise, 28 Days Later, I Am Legend (itself an adaptation of the book credited with establishing the genre), and parody versions like Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, and the novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. (Yes, it really does take the Jane Austen classic and revamp it to include zombie-fighting.) Thus it is somewhat surprising that it took this long for a dedicated anime version to pop up. When this highly-anticipated adaptation of Daisuke Satō's popular manga did hit the schedule, though, Sentai Filmworks wasted no time in snapping it up and simulcasting it on their online Anime Network in both Standard and High Def formats, with the first two episodes available for free and later ones requiring a monthly subscription to the site. Sentai recognized quickly that the blending of action, intensive graphic violence, and fan service found in it is practically tailor-made for the American fan base, and there is little reason to doubt that their initiative will pay off; for what it is, the series has been surprisingly well-made so far.

Madhouse's artistry slides just a little bit in quality in some of the late episodes but otherwise continues to deliver a good-looking series featuring numerous interesting-looking characters and a full barrage of dynamic action. (It does not skimp on its depictions of graphic violence, either, although it does take the edge off of a couple of the most extreme cases.) It also sounds great, occasionally even borrowing some symphonic themes for its background and never failing to amp up its action scenes. The original opener remains except for the final episode, and the original closer is replaced only in the final episode, by a techno-metal number called “Preach Headz Addiction.”

The dub faced a difficult challenge through the Japan arc because of numerous instances where different languages were involved, including Revy specifically speaking in English at one point and languages barriers standing between characters in other cases. For better or worse, Ocean Studios dealt with the problem by mostly ignoring it. In scenes where Rock must translate, he is heard speaking in Japanese, and some Russian does get spoken in other scenes, but otherwise the dub just drops several instances where a language barrier exists in the subtitles and original Japanese dub. Is this a better approach than Revy's painfully shoddy “Engrish” (and from a character supposedly raised in New York City) in the Japanese dub? Opinions will vary greatly. The dub otherwise delivers its normal profanity-laced top-tier effort, especially in Patricia Drake's wonderful performance as Balalaika, with one exception: Lalainia Lindbjerg never sounds quite right as Yukio.

The script of Power Stone is filled with lots of clues showing that Lacey Entertainment is hoping to cash in on the potential mass-market appeal of the show. The script is filled with very current pop-culture references that many of the younger audience would relate to. With comic character designs originating from the shows video game origins, this show simply screams mass-market appeal with a ton of tie-ins such as action figures, video games and all the other fun "kid" merchandise. With flashy battles and various "kid"ish jokes, Power Stone has the potential to gain a larger audience amongst the young teen set.

Working against the mass-market appeal is the original Japanese script, racy character designs amongst the female cast and the occasional showing of Japanese references. Most actual script references are easily changed to easily recognizable English references and Japanese script is easily air brushed from the scene. Any risqué shots of female cast members are simply edited down a bit or again, covered by the dialogue to make actions seem much more tame in nature.

The problem with this 12-episode adaptation of Suzuhito Yasuza's original manga is not that it's bad; it isn't. It is, instead, just a little too bland and underdeveloped for its own good.

Accusing the series of lacking ambition may not be fair, as it does have a semi-apocalyptic plot going on here, but that is, essentially, the root of the problem. It simply does not strive to be anything more than an ordinary super-powered tale, and while it does reasonably well at that, nothing it does will cause it to stand out in a crowded genre. Sure, it has action scenes with some flash, but nothing extraordinarily so. Sure, it tries to lighten up its story with some humor, but it is far from the better series at both the timing and execution of its levity. Its set-up is nothing more than a very slight variation on the standard gimmick of giving teens/young adults super-powers and limiting the scope to Sakurashin alone constrains the weight the story can carry; granted, other series have pulled this off on many other occasions, but typically a lot more flash and/or a more involved story is required. While the series can be commended for brevity in some of its background-establishing flashback scenes, in other places it shows far too little, including failing to adequately explain exactly how Gin ended up possessed by Enjin (a key plot point), why Enjin is so dissatisfied by humans, why his henchman unwaveringly supports his cause, or how Hime ended up with the nasty scar on her neck which she normally covers up with her scarf. Some repetitiveness in the action scenes, especially in the fights between Kotoha and the henchman, does not help, either, and while the series seems to be setting up a couple of potential romantic pairings, it never goes anywhere with them.

One of the few post-2000 anime titles that can justifiably be called a classic, the OVA Voices of a Distant Star stands as one of anime's best and most-beloved romances. Its captivating blending of quality mecha action and melancholy longing has won over innumerable otaku, so it's only natural that it would eventually be adapted into manga form. Thanks to Tokyopop's production of an extra-length (240-page) volume, American fans can now read the manga the same way the anime was originally presented: all in one shot.

Although Voices was the exclusive creation of Makoto Shinkai, manga-ka Mizu Sahara has been entrusted with penning this adaptation. Her plotting follows that of the OVA very closely, albeit with less emphasis on the battle scenes (the final one is almost entirely skipped) and even more emphasis on the characters. Her writing also fleshes out the story quite a bit more, adding several side characters and a few additional scenes into what was originally a bare-bones two-person character study. Here we actually get to meet the girl Noboru associates with when he gives up on waiting for Mikako's messages (she appeared in one very brief shot of the anime and only at a distance), while a couple of friends Mikako makes aboard the Lysithea are also introduced to us. Also included are additional message exchanges between Noboru and Mikako.

You've probably heard it by now: Fooly Cooly (or 'Furi Kuri' if you prefer) defies description. It is at once about nothing and everything - a stream-of-consciousness joyride to a profound destination, an exercise in animation for its own sake that happens to tell a heartfelt coming-of-age story in the bargain. The gags are hilarious, the artistry superb, and the messages endlessly applicable to the human experience. It's all things to everyone, and it's something every serious fan of animation simply must see.

A tour-de-force of visual imagination matched only by George Dunning's Yellow Submarine, FLCL is a sheer joy to watch. Hardly a minute goes by without some kind of animated inspiration, from dead-on recreations of South Park and Lupin III to a fully animated battle between a Playboy bunny surfing on a flying robot and a giant monster that looks straight out of a John Woo film. And let's not forget a series-capping guitar battle that will knock your socks off. Some of these visual stunts bear some relevance to the story; many more do not. But all of them are beautifully executed. The wizards at Production I.G pack every frame of FLCL with TLC, raising the series above the business-as-usual look of the competition and into the realm of cinematic art.

Ever get tired of loud, boorish, charmless exercises in lowest-common denominator pandering? Ever wonder where all of that charm went? The answer is Kamichu!. People just love to bandy about words like "charming" and "warm" when talking about their favorite family entertainment or the latest sapfest, diluting their impact when something truly deserving of such epithets comes along. But Kamichu! defies all other descriptors, simply begging to be called warm and charming. So warm and charming it is.

It begins and ends with the characters; an assortment of detailed personages whose idiosyncracities, insecurities and desires makes them not only the type of people you can imagine meeting on the street, but also the kind of people that you'd like to meet. When the entire school gets behind Yurie's romance, we understand, because we too want to cheer our hapless heroine on. We may not fully understand Matsuri's anti-Christmas sentiments, but that doesn't stop us from wanting her to succeed. They are interesting without ever lapsing into outrageousness or caricature. Their lives proceed unhurried, reassuring in their magical mundanity. In a triumph of magical realism, even the swarms of fantastic creatures that crowd the town's streets seem positively normal, making this volume even more relaxing than those that came before. Magic takes a back seat to just living life and the weirdness never enters head-scratching territory as it has in the past (remember Tyler Meowden and the bubblegum-squid Martian?); the final episodes seem content to simply chronicle their protagonists' (slightly unusual) lives. Heck, one entire episode is devoted entirely to Yurie lounging about under a kotatsu. What was the last show you ever saw that in?

After a long, seemingly endless wait, the second volume of the decidedly unique Princess Tutu has finally arrived. The four episodes on this disc largely continue the quality fairytale shoujo drama seen in the first disc; surprisingly, there's no major drop in animation or storytelling quality.

Princess Tutu is considered a refreshing change of pace from the usual magical girl series, and in volume 2, it's not hard to see why. While it might be easy on first glance to dismiss the show as a ballet-themed take on the old Sailor Moon formula, nothing could be further from the truth. An elegant drama steeped in fairytale trappings, Princess Tutu is focused far more on the interpersonal relationship drama than on the show's fantastical elements. It's probably the most unique entry in the genre thus far, and volume 2 does nothing to change that. Sure, in each episode, Tutu struggles to return heart shards to her prince, but the sequence of events – even by episode nine – never quite dips into monster-of-the-week style repetition. The screenwriter is using every available second of every episode to push the story further, rather than wasting time on unimportant details (minus the comedy relief scenes, which remain mostly unfunny diversions from an otherwise fine production).

The anime adapts Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata's Bakuman. story about two aspiring manga creators in high school. (Ohba and Obata had previously collaborated on the Death Note manga.) Plot Summary: Moritaka Mashiro, a junior high school student, content to live out a relatively normal life as any other does, is persuaded by his classmate, Akito Takagi, to become an aspiring mangaka when the latter realizes his natural talent as an artist. However, Moritaka is reluctant to pursue his dream as his uncle, once a mangaka with his own serializations, died from overwork trying to regain his lost status. However, Mashiro also proposes to Azuki, who surprisingly accepts only on the condition she will marry him when both of them have achieved their dreams. Thus, the cover artwork of the first two volumes published by CMX (which are based on the Enterbrain reprints), looks like Trigun, while the interior pages are all Shurato. Do not, as it were, judge volumes one and two by their covers.

The artistry for Kaidohmaru, which was produced by Production I.G, includes some of the most novel and distinctive stylistic elements you'll see in any anime. CG effects and visuals are used extensively, resulting in some scenes which are beautifully enhanced and others which are too grossly computer-generated to be properly appreciated. Most of the watercolor-based artistry has a faded color scheme and extremely washed out look which makes the whole piece seem like you're viewing it through a smoky filter. According to notes included with the DVD, the intent was to capture the look and feel of artwork from the time period in which the title is set. It's an interesting effect, but one that I could do without, since it makes it difficult to appreciate the quality of the drawings and character designs. In a very unusual move, the early scenes showing how Kintoki came to hook up with Lord Raiko are done almost completely in a crude black-and-white pencil-sketch style with only occasional computer-enhanced coloring. The effect, I'm guessing, is intended to imply that those scenes are all in the indistinct past, episodes which are best left forgotten. Many subtleties are supposedly worked into the artwork, especially effects meant to suggest changing seasons, but even after the supporting documentation told me what to look for I had a hard time spotting these effects. The supporting animation is very good, with many action scenes happening so quickly and smoothly that you may have to slow down the replay just to follow all the moves.

The soundtrack for Kaidohmaru, which is infused with medieval musical themes, offers 2.0 and Dolby 5.1 options for both the English and Japanese language tracks. Subtitling options are separate from language options, which is always a plus. The subtitles themselves have some distinct inconsistencies, however. This is most notable in the case of Ohni-Hime, whose name is sometimes translated in the subtitles as “princess” and at other times just left as the original “hime,” with no apparent rhyme or reason as to why it wasn't consistently done the same way the whole time. The English dub is much more consistent about this, with a decision apparently having been made not to translate “hime” when used as part of her name. In fact, the English dub script is as faithful to the subtitles as any title I've seen, with the only differences being the removal of contractions and the addition of a few “filler” words to get the vocals to better match the lip flaps. This results in a dub track which sounds quite strained and stilted at times (which offers up a perfect example of why dub scripts should concentrate more on being faithful to original meaning rather than the most literal possible translation, but that's an issue for another day) and does an inadequate job of matching up words to lip flaps. The original Japanese vocals are actually worse at that, though, so this criticism isn't exclusive to the English dub. Substantial discrepancies can also be heard between the type of voices used in the Japanese and English vocal tracks; Kintoki has a lower-pitched and more male-sounding voice in Japanese than in English, for instance, and the character of Ibaragi sounds distinctly male in English but more androgynous in Japanese.

The profiles provided for all significant characters fill in some of the gaps in the story and include links to design boards and feature clips of that character in the animation. Character design boards and Manga Enterainment previews and information are also included. Another extra is a 9-minute long Round Table discussion involving the director, animation director, and character designer, which provides some insight into why certain creative decisions were undertaken. The most interesting and original extra is the CG Models feature, which does a visual review of key CG-animated settings and provides extensive details behind the creation of those elements. Fair warning: the text displayed during these reviews doesn't stay on the screen long, so unless you're a speed-reader you'll want to watch those parts with your finger on the “pause” button. Italy's economic and political instabilities have led to an increase in terrorism, and the authorization of a new government agency to quell the threats. The official website for the Mitsudomoe television anime began streaming a 15-second commercial for the second season on Wednesday. (The "Yume-iro no Koi" commercial contains no actual animated footage.)

Norio Sakurai's original gag comedy manga centers around the comedic misadventures of the Marui triplets of sisters in elementary school. Animator Satoshi Kubo revealed the plans for a second season in August, and the 10th manga volume confirmed that the new eight-episode season will premiere next January.

For a series that celebrates the simple joys of life, the dialogue is also appropriately simple (although it does get a bit wordy when describing Aqua's formation or the history of Neo-Venezia). Akari gets in her fair share of optimistic, feel-good quotes, and while best friend Aika doesn't get to chime in with "No embarrassing lines allowed!" this time around, her ambitious personality definitely still comes out in the translation. Unfortunately, one thing that goes untranslated is the sound effects, which probably would have helped add more atmosphere to events like the shrine visit and the gondola race. If it's any consolation, the full-color first page does add some shine and polish to the volume.

As is typical for Sentai Filmworks release, this one has only clean opener and closer for Extras. Subtitle grammar/spelling flaws were minimal but still present. The “Lili's One Point Classic” bits at the end of every episode, which highlight musical terminology and composers, are fully retained.

La Corda D'Oro is arguably weakest in its earlier episodes and does start to come together better as it forges into the double-digit episode count, with the revelation of the façade one character uses giving the series a much-needed jolt out of being absorbed with shojo clichés. It never really more than flirts with being good, and wavers on whether it wants to fully embrace its classical music elements or treat them as a gimmick, but its musical focus is enough to keep it from ever getting bad. Fans of serious-leaning reverse harem series, and those with a strong taste for classical music, should find the series at least palatable.

Last anime by late director Umanosuke Iida with Cowboy Bebop, Patlabor designers

The March issue of Kadokawa Shoten's Gundam Ace magazine is revealing on Wednesday that the previously anounced Towa no Quon project will be a six-part theatrical anime film series that will open in five Japanese cities on June 18. The anime studio BONES is producing Towa no Quon as the last anime of Umanosuke Iida (Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, Hellsing), the director who passed away last November.

The story follows a boy named Quon and others who suddenly wake up with supernatural powers. Gundam Ace had previously presented several sketches that Iida himself drew of an alternate-dimension gate and other elements.

Takeshi Mori (Otaku no Video, Gunsmith Cats, Vandread) is serving as the "collaborative director" in Iida's place, and Saizo Nemoto (Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucho: Tou 2nd Act, Shangri-La script writer) is supervising the scripts.

Toshihiro Kawamoto (Gundam 0083, Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain) is designing the characters and overseeing the animation process. Yutaka Izubuchi (Gundam: Char's Counterattack, Gundam 0080, Patlabor) is credited for the concept designs, while his frequent collaborator Shingo Takeba (Gasaraki, RahXephon, Patlabor WXIII) is also credited for "design works."

The first film will play in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, and Fukuoka. More details will be provided in future issues of Gundam Ace, and the official website will open at towanoquon.com.

Although the art is cute and fun to look at, the animation is nothing to drool over. The frame rate is rather slow, which makes the characters' movements a little jerky in places, as well as the awkward action of their flapping mouths. Considering the nature of the episodes, though, the animation can be excused. After all, the episodes were created to please Ah! Megami-sama fans, and make them laugh. The refreshing and quality content of the scenes is derived from the laughs, and not the animation. For the most part, unless one was viewing the series for the sole purpose of criticizing the animation fluidity, viewers are most likely too busy smiling and laughing to notice the animation flow, or lack thereof.

The Japanese voice cast performed well, giving the scenes the excellently performed emotion they deserved. Somehow, the actors managed to portray their characters so well, that even the voices seemed as though they were tailored for SD anime. The exaggerated facial expressions of the characters were matched perfectly with the voices. The English dub actors also performed especially well. They, also, managed to make their voices match the extreme emotions of the SD actors, and they delivered the lines in such a fashion that both enhanced the comedy and almost allowed one to forget that they were watching a dub. The English script matched the Japanese script well, and there were only a few minor scenes where the meaning of the words was slightly tweaked. The actors were cast well, and their voices just seemed to fit the characters. Overall, an impressive dub.

The significance of setting is not lost on Voices' characters. In one of the film's most sobering moments, Mikako sits in her Tracer on a planet over eight light-years from Noboru, quietly patrolling the land. Silence yields to the cool whispering of a passing rainstorm. Staring up towards a fading sun, Mikako begins to cry, unable to repress her yearning for Noboru. She tears open her cell phone, hurriedly types a short message, and sends the note on its voyage of eight years, 224 days, and eighteen hours. And then, she waits.

Action-craving fans might be left a little unfulfilled; the few space battles aren't exactly Sunrise smooth. But that's no reason to pass up Voices of a Distant Star, because almost everything else is pure perfection. Story, pacing, characterization, focus--it's all perfect. And to complement the elegant animation, Tenmon, one of three others who helped Shinkai realize his vision, offers a wonderfully delicate, understated piano score.

The greater charm, though, comes from the twists the storytelling takes on standard story elements. A female character misinterpreting comments and/or actions by a male character as a confession of love is hardly new, but this time the guy is also misunderstanding the girl on a different point and a third character stuck in the middle is the only one who can see the complete truth. A cosplay session that Hayate gets dragged into takes a rather odd turn, and Nagi's pet Tama not only showcases an unexpected ability but his interactions with Hayate don't necessarily go the way you'd expect. Although Nagi herself seems at first to be the stereotypical cutesy, adorable heroine, she proves to be a lot more ornery that such heroines normally are, and while the inhumanly tough Hayate's attempts to be a “bad guy” getting shot down by his good-hearted nature isn't new, the skill set he has which actually makes him a good choice for being a butler is a fresh twist for a shonen male lead. Orphaned teenage maids who work for wealthy families and effectively become part of the family are an improbably frequent element of anime and manga titles, but Maria seems at least a bit more resilient than the norm and has already displayed a bit more character. Even the butler Klaus, the only other recurring character, has more personality than the hard-nosed bombastic individual one would expect.

An anime adaptation of Kôji Kumeta's Katteni Kaizō gag manga has been green-lit. Akiyuki Shinbo will direct the anime at the studio SHAFT as he did for the anime of Kumeta's Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei manga.

In the story, Kaizō Katsu is a former student of the "Genius Cram School" ("Tensai Juku") but his childhood friend Umi Natori accidentally turned him into an idiot (and possibly insane) by injuring his head. Kaizō's crazy ideas caused an explosion that forced the Genius Cram School to shut down. Even years later when Kaizō is in high school, his former classmates have come looking for payback. So, Kaizō, Umi, and the other members of their high school science club are shown in the most surreal situations.

The manga ran in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine from 1998 to 2004. The 26 original volumes are being recompiled into 14 volumes for a new reprint edition to mark Kumeta's 20th anniversary as a manga creator.

In a related development, the Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei anime franchise is getting three Blu-ray boxes between March and July.

However, the story would be just as compelling if there were stick figures acting it out. The journey the reader takes along with the brothers over these three volumes is long and insightful. No other manga, and maybe no other book, on the bookshelf will leave you thinking like Fullmetal Alchemist.

The story begins with a threat against the Tokyo governor, but Conan's quick thinking prevents any fatalities when a subway tunnel is blown up. Conan learns there may be a connection to a village that was relocated for the construction of a dam, and he races to stop the criminal before the next attack.

OVA series generally have different storytelling requirements than long TV shows. We have to learn a lot about a (hopefully) small cast of characters in a relatively short amount of time. Generally, romances don't work so well in this format, since you aren't given much time to watch the love blossom. It's difficult to care one way or the other about the on-screen relationship if you're only shown a few minutes worth of character development. Zaion suffers from this problem. Yuuji and Ai fall in love after maybe four minutes of on-screen woo-flinging, and suddenly they're making rash decisions in each other's favor. Yuuji is an Angst-Ridden-Renegade-Special-Forces-Guy, while Ai is your basic Rei Ayanami type, with very little emotion besides a few different variations on the blank stare. Who wouldn't want to spend a few hours watching these two awkwardly refuse to confess their misbegotten love for each other? Halfway through the second episode, after Ai refuses to save people's lives in the heat of battle for some reason (further distancing her totally unsympathetic character from an already alienated audience), Yuuji risks his life and his career to drag her out to the forest on his Angst-Ridden-Renegade-Special-Forces-Guy motorcycle. As it happens, Yuuji contracts a new form of the M34 virus that can destroy the nanomachines in his blood, the same ones that form his Mighty Morphin' Virus Fighter suit when he's on duty. Now, the organization that made them both must hunt them down like dogs, retake their secret weapon, and bring Yuuji down.

The content sets the series apart far less than its approach, however. Most of this volume alternates between a secret forward military base and the streets of Subasci, but wherever its focus lies, that focus is always seen through the lens of a camera, usually one wielded by either Saeko or Keiichi. Thus the story gets told through a series of narrated photos, first-person-perspective video snippets, automated mission recordings, and examinations of computer files, with clicks of camera shutters, selections on a computer screen, and fades to static used to transition between scenes; the shift to the closer is even marked by a computer powering down. While this may sound like a choppy method for telling a story, it actually works incredibly well. Events flow along smoothly as the camera concentrates only on selected moments and relies on context and narration to link them together. Even mundane scenes like jogging and walking through a cafeteria get included, so viewers never feel like they are missing anything. Scenes like the perspective flipping around suddenly when the camera's user gets knocked down contribute to the occasional feeling of watching a documentary, albeit an animated one that includes mild mecha elements.

Flag marks the Animation Production debut for Ansa Studio, which has previously only done some in-between work but fully collaborates with the much better-known Aniplex on this project. Drawn snapshots, sometimes patterned off of real photos, mix with actual live-action photographs, animation still shots, generally brief fully-animated clips, and computer screen displays to create a unique visual look. All of the camera shots have a slightly grainy texture to them not evident in the closing visuals, perhaps as a deliberate effort to heighten the impression of looking through a camera, and those pictures taken in adverse lighting conditions reflect that in the toning and coloration. Military equipment purely gets CG treatment, while character designs, which occasionally exaggerate features but usually favor a more realistic look, are drawn in the traditional manner. Diverse background artistry provides lots of detailed and pretty or earthy settings, and what animation there is pays particular attention to detailed renditions of characters talking, but the true visual highlight is unquestionably the Flag photo at the center of the series, which shows the silhouette of praying figures through a blue Flag being flown by celebrating soldiers and Uddayids. Given the emphasis placed on the impact this photo makes in the story, the series' greatest triumph may be convincing the viewer that the Flag photo does, in fact, warrant the attention it gets.

Review:

Ah, the power of production values. It's easy to forgive a lot of shortcomings when something is fun to look at. And Coyote Ragtime Show is very fun to look at. Quality bleeds from every pore. From the ostentatiously pointless displays of technical prowess that pepper the show (gratuitous jiggling, cameras that crank around characters for no apparent reason, the flowing of intricate loli-goth clothing as characters move) to smaller, less noticeable improvements (specifically the unusually complex ways that people's lips move to form words). However, the true gems are the balletic, bloody action set pieces. While the action is chewing up the screen, blasting every thought from your breathless mind, the show is an undiluted visceral treat.

And then the action stops. The gut settles down, the brain takes over, and the enjoyment factor dips precipitously. The first episode is a muscular, exciting prison-break-turned-massacre whose preposterousness only hits home after it's over. It's all downhill from there. The plot immediately devolves into criminals-on-the-run claptrap fueled by a girl-with-pendant-that-leads-to-mysterious-treasure maguffin. The volume ends on a miserable note with a limp run-through of a heist that has more holes in it than a block of Swiss cheese at the wrong end of a shooting range. Of course, each episode spends some time flinging bullets, cutting throats and blowing stuff up, all with admirable polish and to solid effect. But the action inevitably ends, leaving one to contemplate the deja-vu cast of stock characters, cheesy dialogue and cruise-control plotting. It begins, after a while, to creep into the action as well, when, during gaps in the violence, one begins to realize that the enemy is a troop of android girls, each with their own fetish-induced personality and trademark weapon, all wrapped up in gothic-lolita pseudo-maid attire. The smiling little girl in the top-hat who chucks stick grenades decorated with hearts. The butch girl with the throwing knives. The motherly girl with the katana. The punky girl with a big attitude, bigger shotgun, and a suspiciously close relationship with the apparent leader of the troop. It's like Strawberry Panic! with guns.

The rest of the cast isn't much better. Far and away, the most interesting character is Angelica, a whip-smart, gluttonous, voluptuous policewoman who plays Zenigata to Mister's Lupin. It's no coincidence that the strongest episode is also the one in which she plays the lead. Mister, on the other hand, is an "honorable outlaw" stereotype of the first order who has yet to display any of the qualities with which Angelica initially ascribes him. Does having a generic name mean that you have to have a generic personality? Franca, the girl with the pendant, is the token spunky girl, introduced in a scene—she clocks an unruly "Coyote" with a frying pan for roughhousing in her bar—that is designed to make you say "that girl's got spunk" but instead leaves you reaching for the Maalox.

But, for all its silliness, blandness, and even its occasionally hideously derivative script, the production values still manage to wrestle the show over to the enjoyable side of "totally disposable." A circle of sky-diving android assassins in frilly dresses may be laughable conceptually, but it still looks damn cool. Other technical merits, such as the meticulously detailed settings, sleek female designs, as well as the OVA-quality animation help to distract from the show's less admirable attributes.

The oft-insistent soundtrack is less of a boon. It makes for good listening, but provides such obvious cues (dark organ music... perhaps the person being introduced is a bad guy? Bouncy silly music... perhaps this scene is supposed to be funny?) that its lack of subtlety approaches unintentional parody. That said, the heavy guitar used for the action scenes, while far from subtle, works quite well (and sounds good besides).

The dub takes a few more liberties with the original script than some of ADV other recent efforts, and it pays dividends with a smooth, strong overall dub. It has its weak links (Franca comes to mind) but also moments in which it equals, and occasionally exceeds, the original (Angelica and especially Swamp). Performances cleave closely to those of the original cast with satisfying results. Special mention goes to the English script for matching dialogue with lip movements. Since the characters' mouths move in ways more complicated than the usual "blah blah blah" of standardly animated shows, keeping the dialogue from noticeably deviating from the lip flaps is no mean feat.

Boring extras: Clean opening and closing, previews and a squint 'til you go blind slideshow of production art. Interesting extras: None, sorry.

Rife as it is with cringe-inducing clichés, hobbled as it is with a lazy script, hampered as it is by its who-cares cast, Coyote Ragtime Show is enough fun simply to look at that it manages to escape being conscripted to the anime junk heap. It may leave your brain starving, but it will feed your eyes enough candy to make them very happy.

Much of the comedy in Fumoffu is built around Sousuke's single-minded misinterpretation of situations and his ridiculous military overreaction to perceived threats. While one would think this might get old after a while, the humor is still as effective as ever at the end of this volume. The true magic here is that, while you may know that Sousuke is going to do something to mess up the situation, it's much harder to predict exactly how he's going to do it. This volume offers up a new weapon (of sorts) to Sousuke: the Bonta-kun costume, which is amazingly expressive for being a theme park mascot's outfit. (Bonta-kun, the stuffed bear Kaname has possessed since the earliest stages of the original series, can only say “Fumoffu,” hence the title of this series.) Exactly how Sousuke can manipulate weapons or even effectively move in the costume is unclear, but its two appearances in this volume are two of its comedic highlights. As always, Sousuke continues to be the perfect foil for the ever-exasperated Kaname, who seems to be a magnet for trouble. Despite the amount of aggravation Sousuke causes her, one has to wonder how she'd survive high school without him—and I mean that literally.

Each of the three episodes of this volume is divided into two mini-stories, some related to each other, some not. “The Hamburger Hill of Art,” the mini-story involving Sousuke serving as the model for an art class sketching project, is pretty much self-descriptive if one understands the Vietnam War reference in the title, while “The Single-Minded Stakeout” brings out Bonta-kun for the first time. In “The Pure Yet Impure Grappler” and “Tresspassing on Good Faith” Sousuke butts heads with Issei Subaki, the Karate Club captain, while helping Kaname deal with an eviction notice to the Karate Club and “helping” an injured school janitor who turns out to be an unstoppable monster. In “The Hard Sell Fetish” a purported costumed sex offender must be dealt with when he attacks some of the girls, while Sousuke tries to avoid being recognized by a traffic officer self-assigned to the case (the same psycho officer who tried to chase him and Kaname down in episode 2); despite the subject matter, this story is nowhere near as serious as it sounds, and indeed much weirder.

The volume wraps up with “The Patient of Darkness,” in which Kaname and her friends visit an abandoned, burnt-out, and supposedly haunted hospital in an effort to find out what, exactly, it takes to scare Sousuke. (SIDE NOTE: Abandoned, ruined hospitals which remain for years without demolition must be common in Japan because this isn't the first series I've seen which uses this specific gimmick. Either that, or there's a single one which keeps getting used by different companies.) Disappointingly, Student Body President Atsunobu and his assistant Ren, whom I found to be the most entertaining supporting characters in the first volume, only make a single brief appearance in this one.

The opener and closer are both delights in both the artistic and musical senses; the opener especially is worth repeat viewings. The musical scoring capably supports the story and artistry but is not otherwise remarkable. ADV's English dub also continues to be strong. Though Lucy Christian does a fine job with Kaname and most of the supporting cast proves capable (see if you can ID the long-time VA who voices Bonta-kun; those who know English VAs will probably be surprised), the pivotal performance continues to be Chris Patton's cadenced, deadpan rendition of Sousuke. Granted, his voice and style doesn't match well to that of the original seiyuu, but no one who even mildly tolerates dubs is going to care; it's a great performance, and the English dub would be so much less funny without Patton's styling. Also especially impressive was Jason Douglas's ability to match the original seiyuu word-for-word in a couple of extremely fast-paced bits of dialogue as Mr. Mizuhoshi in episode 4—and you could even still make out what he was saying! The English script stays much tighter to the subtitles in this volume than it did in the previous one, though this volume also has a lot less slang and street lingo, too.

This lack of visual sophistication is matched only by the dialogue, which relies on pretentious supernatural-fantasy babble to explain what's going on, and then reduces to formulaic good-versus-evil one-liners during the fight scenes. Even worse are some of the speaking mannerisms assigned to certain characters, like the American military leader who shows up in the second half. (Here's a tip: if you have to come up with a weird speech pattern to define a character, the character isn't well-defined enough.) And yet, with such generic and predictable dialogue, the translation team still manages to let a couple of typos sneak past. At least they're thorough enough to explain Japanese honorifics in the footnotes, as well as translating the various signs and sound effects on each page, but clearly language is not a major concern when the violence speaks for itself.

The real question about Witchblade: Takeru is not whether it's worth getting a two-volume omnibus that costs the same as both volumes individually, but whether it's worth getting at all. Let's say you buy Volume 1 and decide that the series is terrible—in that situation, you've only lost ten dollars. On the other hand, this omnibus is twenty dollars spent on gratuitous fanservice and violence, juvenile shock imagery, and a plot cobbled together from the deformed limbs of other action-supernatural potboilers. For that kind of money, one might as well buy the real American Witchblade, or even the Witchblade anime, which at least offers polished, well-produced fanservice and violence. In the end, there's only one reason to pick up this omnibus: because the store had Volume 1 in stock but not Volume 2, or vice versa. And that still makes more sense than most of what happens in this book.

To Heart lovers, rejoice! This volume contains the part you've all been waiting for: the arrival of green-haired cutie Multi. Easily the most recognizable and popular character in the series, she lives on in the hearts of fans everywhere through figurines, cosplay, and other creative works—not to mention being one of the founding principles of moe, an android girl searching for her heart. But for everyone else who isn't quite as enamored, guess what: this series is still as boring as all get out. Once again we are sucked into the world of high school students who do absolutely nothing, except for typical high school activities. Akari does try to boost her relationship with Hiroyuki, and Multi's presence makes for some interesting questions about artificial intelligence—but these episodes still contain many long stretches of non-plot.

An episode title like "A Tranquil Time" really says it all, unless it were something even more fitting like "A Boring Time" or "A Waste of Time." Hiroyuki's study date doesn't just suffer from a contrived setup (the main guy is left alone with the main girl, insert romantic implications here) but also delivers it with glacial pacing. Studying for a test is dreary enough; dragging 20 minutes of anime out of it is near-unbearable. The same might be said of the school festival episode, which consists mostly of catty bickering between classmates and never actually gets to the part where they hold the festival. This wouldn't be the first time that an episode was all buildup and no payoff—what's the use of such preparations if viewers don't get to enjoy the end result? The Multi episode isn't quite as pointless, being more of a step-by-step "How to Befriend a Robot" affair, but it still suffers from the same slow pace and tranquilized kum-ba-yah attitude that may be relaxing for some, but infuriating for others.

This light-headed apathy does have some bright spots, though—Hiroyuki's offbeat sense of humor comes out from time to time, like when answering study questions for history or teaching Multi how to sweep the floors. Akari's brief childhood-memory montage suggests that her relationship with Hiroyuki might, in the next few eons, be headed somewhere. The most interesting story angle, however, comes when Multi starts interacting with other students. Although friendly and receptive, she lacks the capabilities (what, no wireless internet?) that others would expect from a "service robot"—so others see her as inferior, even though Hiroyuki and Akari have warmed up to her. It's a thought-provoking situation about whether robots are meant to be servants or friends, and the slightly open ending suggests that her storyline has more to offer.

The series' visual quality is clearly a product of its time—hello, grainy hand-drawn art—but the digital restoration work in this release helps to bring out some of the finer touches. The color palette, with its warm pastel tones, continues to impress, especially in detailed interiors that capture all the little props and knick-knacks seen in daily life. Even something as minor as proper cel-shading on clothes adds depth to the art. However, it can't change the fact that the character designs are ordinary and the animation is functional at best. Hiroyuki is, after all, the ultimate generic anime male, and all his cute little girlfriends are designed to fit into cute little stereotypes rather than break out of them. Throw these characters into a slow-paced show where most movement involves simple walking and talking, and it's clear that exciting visuals are not part of the menu.

The quiet, laid-back nature of the story is matched by some appropriately quiet music, and even more often than that, silence. The few times that the soundtrack does emerge, it's usually a ballad-like instrumental meant to augment a pivotal scene, and to that extent, it works. However, the melodic content is ultimately forgettable, and doubly so for the theme songs, which contain some inconsequential warblings about love.

The other side of audio, voice acting, also features that same middle-of-the-road blandness. Tune into the Japanese track for a chirpy cute-widdle-high-school-girl experience, but don't be surprised to find that everyone sounds kind of the same. The English dub is decidedly different in its tone, with some character voices going almost an octave lower—Akari is more down-to-earth, Tomoko carries a businesslike demeanor—but there isn't much acting to do when the personalities are so one-sided and the dialogue so simple. Even the bright and chipper Multi isn't much of a standout. But hey, be thankful for one thing: screechy Shiho stays out of the way for most of these episodes! This translation is careful to minimize the amount of rewriting between dub and sub; in fact, there are times where the spoken English line matches the subtitles word for word.

Ichigo's attempt to rescue Rukia and face down her brother Byakuya gets thwarted by Yoruichi, who drags him off and puts him through a demanding three-day training regimen to help him realize his own Bankai release for his zanpakutō. Meanwhile, Uryu has his own showdown with a Soul Reaper with an ugly past connection to the Quincies – Squad 12's Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi – while Orihime gets carried off to the Squad 11 barracks. The plot also hits all of the typical notes: a hero must journey to a foreign and hostile world where he initially gets clobbered, must learn to develop new powers and become stronger to face the major baddies, and ultimately pull off a heroic rescue. Like with the “Assault on the Hidden Leaf Village” arc in Naruto, the main point of conflict spins off into several smaller individual confrontations which must, of course, be faced in turn and do, of course, reveal backstory tidbits in the process. In this case it results in an agonizingly long break between the beginning of Ichigo's climactic fight against Byakuya and its resolution. Naturally a dastardly plot is behind it all, but Bleach does score points for the depth and intricacy of the underlying scheme and for the degree of misdirection it pulls off.

Whether creator Tite Kubo or producer Studio Pierrot intentionally drew upon them for inspiration or not, Bleach shows the unmistakable influence of earlier iconic shonen action series. As usual, a certain suspension of logic is required to make the series work, such as how certain buildings in the Seireitei seem to exist only for characters to stand on or knock down, why intensively battle-trained high-ranking Soul Reapers are so slow to react in certain situations, or the rampant inconsistencies in the detection of spiritual pressure signatures; characters are obviously detectable or not according to the whims of the plot, which makes DBZ's power-sensing methods look like paragons of consistency by comparison.

The identity of one of the main villains will surprise no one with a functioning brain, but the others likely came as a big shock when the series first aired. The series also deserves credit for pulling off one of the biggest “I am a total bastard” moments in anime history – and anyone who has seen these episodes should not need to guess the scene in question – and for setting up several eminently satisfying landmark moments in the series, including Ichigo's dramatic rescue of Rukia at the moment of her execution or him achieving his Bankai release for the first time. Trumping even those, though, is the final scene of episode 62, where a simple but long-awaited apology claims rights as the series' finest moment in its first hundred episodes.

And speaking of Rukia, at no point in the series is she more helpless and pathetic than during this run of episodes. Granted, she has been forced into that situation by circumstances, but that makes it no less irritating given how strong a character she was in the series' early going. The series otherwise does an excellent job of establishing and managing a very broad and diverse roster of characters through this story arc.

What truly separates Bleach from its competitors, though, is its art design. It may not be the prettiest or best-rendered of series, and its manga-like way of handling shading is an unattractive style point in anime form, but the costuming certainly is sharp and the overall visual impression is appealing. The black-and-white contrasts of the vaguely samurai-styled outfits of the Soul Reapers make for a sharp look, especially in the Captain uniforms, so much so that characters not dressed like that – such as Yoruichi in human form – are practically eyesores by comparison.

(Uryu in combat gear gets a pass since his uniform's aesthetic is just as sharp.) Zanpakutō in any form stand amongst the better anime sword designs and the vast creativity of their released forms, as frequently seen in these episodes, matches or betters any equivalent in other shonen action series. The series' ability to make its cast easily distinguishable without getting outrageous is another plus. It does not stand among the best action series in terms of fight animation or animation in general, but its fights are still plenty dynamic enough to be involving when they are not being interrupted by segueways to other fights or background-dumping flashbacks.

If you need a Litmus test to determine your compatibility with Super Robot Wars, try watching the opening sequence. Just sit and watch as the cast about-faces in perfect time with the opening riff, as the characters sidle up to the screen with their mecha blazing in the background, as the villains loom over the entirety of space, larger than life. Don't worry if you laugh while the JAM Project shamelessly shouts lines like "Howl, red-hot soldier!"" and "Hard, strong, hot!," you're probably supposed to. And the real test is at the end anyway. If you can walk away from the preposterous spectacle of that opening without a smile on your face, a curious lightness in your heart and an inexplicable spring in your step, then you probably aren't susceptible to the series' peculiar brand of muscle-headed magic.

And that magic, that childish, unselfconscious revelry in all things big and loud and mechanized, is all that SRW has going for it. There's a reason why the 3D CG used for the mecha is superior by an order of magnitude to the inflexible two-dimensional character animation, and why the often apocalyptic soundtrack is so much better than the shallow content would seem to warrant: unsubtle music and slick-moving mecha are crucial in fetishizing robots and creating spectacular battles, while characters and plots are secondary at best. So, if you aren't susceptible to the predatory lines of a giant spaceship or the heroic design of a super robot, then the appeal of the series will be entirely lost on you. Director Hiroyuki Kakudou knows that: he wastes little effort on the animation of anything that isn't exploding, focusing the budget and his not-inconsiderable skill with imagery on scenes like the Hagwane plowing out of the sea into the sky and a series of swift aerial dogfights.

The downside to a laser-focused approach such as this is that, even for its target audience, the series fails utterly when outside the area of its focus. With nothing capable of competing with the Antarctic and space colony battles of the last volume, most of this volume falls into that category. The majority of these three episodes are spent introducing characters like cute but clueless Kusuha, and Masaki, who between the two of them have a total of two prominent traits: a bad sense of direction and a penchant for creating awful energy drinks. Three episodes is a long, long time to learn that. Oh, to be sure, there's plenty else—all of the various factions spend a lot of time maneuvering around each other to little or no effect and even incidental characters have mysterious pasts to be hinted at—but it all slips from the brain as if Teflon-coated, leaving nothing but those energy drinks and that bad sense of direction.

The dialogue continues to exhume old dead clichés that would have been better left to molder in their graves, including undead oldies like "we may be cousins, but next time I will kill you," as well as pretty much everything that comes out of Masaki's hot-headed mouth. The show's intentional humor is laughable—and not in a good way—and as the show lets up on the action pedal, delving only into inconclusive skirmishes, there's time even to turn a critical eye to the all-important mechanical designs, making all the more apparent the debt Ryu's R-1 owes to the Gundam, Masaki's Cybaster owes to Dunbine, and Shu's Granzon owes to every impervious wall of mecha evilness ever designed.

That's a lot of sagging between-battles filler for a bad sense of direction and a nasty energy drink to carry, and as might be expected, they aren't quite up to the task. Even without Bandai Visual USA's 9-volume release schedule, fifty-dollar price point, and complete lack of extras this is beginning to look like a bad bet. Though when the Granzon breaks out its ball-o-purple sparkly destruction, fanning again that magical juvenile spark that lives deep in the recesses of some men's hearts, suddenly another volume doesn't seem like such a chore. Dammit.

The first thing one thinks upon watching Il Teatrino is: What on Earth happened? A direct sequel to 2003's superlative Gunslinger Girl, it looks shabby and inelegant and feels less cutting and complex. Where the original was a disquieting feast for the eyes, bursting with operatic energy and stark, violent beauty, Il Teatrino looks pretty much like any other anime—full of panned stills, simplified designs and bright, artificial settings. And where season one cut deep with heartbreaking attention to emotional detail and a deeply felt understanding of the tragedy of its premise, season two focuses on terrorist intrigue and treats the girls' relationships with their handlers less than critically.

So what happened? A lot. For one, the astronomical budget (¥13 million, or about $130K per episode) of the original came back down to Earth, taking its inevitable toll on the visuals. Which explains the panning stills and other short-cuts. But it doesn't explain everything. More important is the transfer of directing duties from underrated technician extraordinaire Morio Asaka to empty shirt Hiroshi Ishiodori. That Ishiodori can't frame powerful images and never pushes the action beyond the merely competent of course has an effect, but what really hurts is the loss of Asaka's insight, his ability to see and communicate subtleties of feeling and thought, to sink into viewers, like needles into flesh, the horrifying contradictions of the lives lived by the girls of the SWA.

Ishiodori attempts to tap into those same feelings, but he's hampered by Artland's simplified, shallowly attractive designs and his own pedestrian instincts. Under his tutelage Triela, Henrietta, Rico and the others come dangerously close to being the “cute girls with big guns” stereotypes that the first season so studiously avoided. No longer can you see the torture behind Rico's bright acceptance of her existence or the near-psychotic possessiveness behind Henrietta's devotion to Giuse. His troubling habit of taking things at face value, capturing only the surface, doesn't extend to the girls alone. He ends the series with an affirmation of their relationships that rather unpleasantly resembles an implicit approval of their situation. Not even Kou Ootani's score—his best in years; filled with a wealth of haunting piano, great theme songs, and even a wonderful reworking of “Scarborough Fair”—can make up for the layers of meaning and emotion that are lost.

The hell of it is that the strength of mangaka Yu Aida's writing is such that even the dull over-layer of Ishiodori's direction can't fully suppress it. He has such an embarrassment of lacerating, morally ambiguous riches to offer that they poke through in quantities large enough to shred most of the series' peers. Il Teatrino is, like its predecessor, a black work of fragmented morality, an ice-cold portrayal of love and affection deliberately turned to violent, destructive ends; made all the more unpleasant by its exploitation of young girls and their half-formed emotions. This season further complicates things by introducing Pinocchio, who functions as both foil and parallel, and Franco and Franca, who put an all-too-human face on the SWA's terrorist opponents. In Aida's world of muddied morality, terrorists rekindle their humanity while their pursuers slowly abandon it, motivations and methods are shared along both sides of the law, and bittersweet beauty is to be found in the love one can have for a partner who exploits it. That all of that can emerge from under Ishiodori's deadening hand is certainly reason to celebrate. That it has to is a goddamned shame.

Still, devolution from season one notwithstanding, Il Teatrino is a propulsive political thriller with an introspective bent and a lot of difficult, unanswered questions to ask—an unusually sympathetic tale of terrorism and counterterrorism that can find humanity in even the most inhuman acts. The action isn't close to the standard set by the first season, but Pinocchio gives the series an overall continuity that the original lacked, allowing it to build to a bone-crushing finale that overcomes its technical shortcomings with sheer gut-punch narrative force. And even if it isn't as complex or penetrating as Gunslinger Girl, when one of the girls looks up and sweetly agrees to commit some atrocity, it can still cut the heart right out of you.

Opportunities for jealousy, anyone? Local girl, whose name is Filka, also helps put Uruki's troubles to rest with a beautifully scripted honorary funeral for Soren. But of course, the funeral was secretly Takiko's idea.
